Perched
high above the desert capital of Jodhpur,
Umaid Bhawan Palace is the last of the great
palaces of India and one of the largest
residences in the world – set amidst
26 acres of lush gardens.
Named
after Maharaja Umaid Singh, grandfather
of the present Maharaja of Jodhpur, this
golden-yellow sandstone monument was conceived
on the grandest possible scale, in the fashionable
Art Deco style of that time. After 15 years
in construction, the 347-room palace was
finally completed in 1943 – and has
served as the principal residence of the
Jodhpur royal family since. It took some
3000 people working round the clock for
a period of fifteen years to complete.
This
massive structure of Indo-Colonial and the
art – deco style of the thirties is
considered to be one of the largest and
grandest private residences in the world.
It is also the last expression of princely
architectural extravaganza during the British
Raj and commands a distinct place among
the remains of the Rathore Clan in Jodhpur.
In
1977 the palace was converted into a heritage
hotel and opened for the public, offering
the pleasures of luxury living against the
backdrop of a sweet bygone. Truly there
is no better place to celebrate your wedding
as grandly as it will be at Umaid bhavan
Palace in Jodpur.
From
the moment you step into its premise you
are in a different world. A huge immaculate
lawn leads you the imposing lobby that extends
a stately welcome; wherefrom sweeping marble
staircase direct you to the Maharaja's private
suite(s) and regal apartments.
